Casimir Joseph Baumgardt (1868-1938) was from the village of Golzau (Gołczewo, Poland). He was four years old when he arrived in Otago with his parents. Few photos exist of Joe Bungard, as he was known around the time he married in 1892. He would have been busy on the farm providing for his family and unlike his sisters, he stayed away from the photography studios.
His wife Lena (1873-1962) was born onboard the ship to New Zealand, with her parents being from Lunow, Brandenburg, Germany.

No early photos of Lena have been located either. She was born as Caroline Wilhelmine Augustie Daumann. Her stepfather was William Gutschlag. The couple met near Gore in Southland and settled on the family land in Waihola where Joe grew up. She was hardworking and along with raising a large family, would host numerous relatives over the lengthy summer holidays. The couple cared for patriarch Paul Baumgardt in their home until his death in 1923.
Joe and Lena Bungard had 12 children, all are pictured below except Evy (1900-1914) who died young.
