As you may know, I am passionate about Family History. Our Baumgardt family came to New Zealand in 1872 and it has surprised me that all contact has been lost with family back in Poland. This has lead me to continue research after publishing the book in 2012.
So where are our Baumgardt and Fliss cousins ??? We now have twelve great-grandchildren of Paul and Eva Baumgardt who have taken an autosomal DNA test. They are spread over the Bungard, Francis, Wells and Wilson lines. Its important to have a large group of family members test as on some occasions ONLY ONE family member is a match to the European or American DNA cousin. If you know anyone about to test, please suggest that they go to the oldest generation first. Ancestry is the best place to start. I would advise you to then upload your raw data to the other testing companies which allow this - GEDmatch, Family Tree DNA and My Heritage. DNA results spread over all of these companies is optimal. If you would like a GEDCOM of our tree to attach to your DNA please email me and I can send you one. The screenshot above is the Ancestry Ethnicity report for a great-grandson of Paul and Eva Baumgardt. The Y DNA test - We now have a match between a New Zealand Bungard and a Polish Baumgard. More to follow on this breakthrough. Thank you Thank you so much to family who have done DNA tests and uploaded the results to GEDmatch. At this site we have been able to separate the results and see which chromosomes are in common and therefore find DNA cousins in Europe, USA and Canada. But you must have a strong paper Tree to attach your DNA matches to, so the two elements go hand in hand. The project has had highs and lows and I sometimes wonder why I spend so much time looking back into the past. Frances Anderson (who coordinated the Baumgardt Family Gathering at Waihola in 2012) kindly reminded me that my work is keeping the connections to our homeland alive and that these threads could easily be lost forever. I am always aware that our healthy Family Tree is due to the efforts of many people especially my mother Pauline Morris née Bungard who started the search. Then in 2011, Lyn Whelan assisted me with the Baumgardt Family History book (published in 2012). My cousins Christina Morris (Gutschlag and Baumgardt lines) and Leonard Bagley (Daumann line) have shared their research with me. Anne Brady now works with me regularly and is a great mentor. If you are also researching and have any information to discuss please get in touch. Regards Elizabeth Cowie (nee Morris) 2021, Join the Baumgardt Family History facebook page for updates |
